Synopsis

“In its purest form love is self-sacrificing, eternal, selfless, enduring, truthful, forgiving and indulgent. It also feels an awful lot like a kick to the stomach when you try to fight it!”

All Everleigh Carsen wanted to do was complete her final semester at Hensley University and begin the life she carefully planned.

When a wave of violent crime seizes campus, Everleigh is persuaded to attend a school sponsored self-defense seminar by her best friend, where she meets volunteer instructor, Hunter Charles. After Everleigh’s biting sarcasm induces Hunter to eject her from class, a tempestuous relationship is born.

Everleigh is determined to forget the striking man, but fate—that fickle shrew—continuously intervenes. Unable to escape him, she declares Hunter an enemy combatant. The only complication…Hunter is resolutely pursuing vindication…by any means necessary. Verbal warfare ensues, and despite Everleigh’s ingenious efforts, in Hunter, she has finally found her equal.

My Review 5 Stars out of 5

This book was freakin AMAZING!!!!  I LOVED IT FROM BEGINNING TO END……This is not a book I would recommend to start reading at 11pm at night and you have to go to work the next day.  I could not put the book down.  I read it straight into the morning and only got a couple hours of sleep. BUT it was worth it.  Everleigh Carsen is the main character and let me tell you she needed the spot light.  She is by far one of funniest characters I have ever seen.  The things she says are so witty and sarcastic, and you can’t help but laugh at the things she says.  She has no filter.

The book starts off with Everleigh and her best friend Sam starting their last semester of college before they graduate.  Sam and Everleigh are very close.  I would say more like sisters.  Everleigh has no family.  Her mom died her senior year of high school, and she stayed with Sam to finish out the school year.  They became friends when they were little and grew up together.  Everleigh’s mom was the help and Sam comes from money.  Sam’s parents are hardly ever with her so Sam grows up with having nobody that really shows any attention to her.  They are too wrapped up themselves and constantly working.  It’s pretty sad because here she is with all this money and her parents ignore all the time.  Sam and Everleigh grow close and as they were growing up Everleigh’s mom would let Sam stay with them because Sam’s parents were never home.  In reality, Everleigh’s mom was a surrogate mom for Sam.  When she passes away it hits them hard and especially Everleigh since her mom was her only living family.  The strength Everleigh shows is amazing.

In the beginning of the book it starts off with a news report about girls being attacked on campus.  So Sam forces Everleigh to take a self-defense course with her because Sam wants to make sure they know how to protect themselves in the event they are attacked.  This is where you meet Hunter……….OH Hunter….He is so dreamy and when they first meet Everleigh thinks he is good looking but when he talks to her and berates her in front of the class because she was talking to Sam while Hunter’s partner was giving tips on how to always be prepared.  He asked her to leave because she disturbed the class.  She is furious because he embarrasses her and doesn’t understand why he made such a big deal.  She didn’t say anything so everybody could hear other than Sam.  Everleigh walks away furious and decides to have a good day.  As she starts her classes she finds out that Hunter is in one of her classes and tries her best to ignore him.  However, Hunter recognizes her immediately and decides to tease her because he knows he gets under Everleigh’s skin.  Here is a scene from the book where I about died laughing:

Excerpt

At the end of the lecture, I roughly shoved my precious (this is the nickname for her laptop) into my bag, grabbed my possessions, and dashed for the door.  I succeed in covering half the distance to the exit when he called me.  I pretend not to hear as I clumsily pulled on my jacket.
“Miss Carsen,” he reiterated.  Again, I played deaf.
“Everleigh,” he nearly shouted with exasperation.
I considered the ramifications of ignoring him and sprinting for the exit until two simultaneous obstructions hindered me.  First, Hunter stepped directly in front of me, effectively blocking my getaway.  Second, while winding the scarf around my neck, I was unaware the end had caught in the sleeve of my jacket and effectively managed to strangle myself.  Every effort to free the scarf only tightened my noose.  The only redeeming aspect of this nightmare---if my escape failed, I could kill myself, saved from further indignity.
Hunter carefully placed his hand over mine, and stilled the jerking motion that further deprived me of oxygen.  He extended one finger, silently requesting a moment as he studied my predicament.  After a series of calculated maneuvers, he draped the liberated scarf loosely around my neck; how he managed to free me without dissolving into laughter remained a mystery.
“There we go.  The oxygen deprivation must have impaired your hearing, explaining why you didn’t stop sooner,” he quipped.

I could not breathe I was laughing so hard.  Their relationship starts off very rocky where they each fight back with words and coming up with the most sarcastic thing to say.  Hunter is taken by her and they eventually become very good friends.  Now this is where I was like come on Hunter!!!!  But there is a reason he can’t be her boyfriend.  She doesn’t understand it but decides it’s better to be friends than nothing else.  Other than Sam, Hunter is the only other person that can match her snarky remarks.  He challenges her and she challenges him.
There is so much this book gives you.  It gives you drama, comedy, suspense, mystery, and romance.  When you find out Hunter’s secret then you finally understand why he never pursed anything more than friendship with Everleigh.  He wanted it so bad but he had some obligations he had to deal with before anything could happen between them.  Meanwhile she starts to date, and you can tell that Hunter is so jealous but there is nothing he can do about it.  Everleigh decides to believe that he is gay, which is freakin hilarious.  She didn’t have a problem with him being gay which is why he made a very good friend to her.  She spent a lot of the time thinking he is gay at the beginning of the book and during their friend relationship.  Everybody could see that he was not gay and only had eyes for Everleigh, but she didn’t believe it because why else wouldn’t he want to be more than friends?

The attacks at the school started getting more violent, and you start to wonder who is doing these attacks. It becomes suspenseful, and then down right heartbreaking.  There is so much more to the book and I really I loved it…because the book kept me on my toes.
You will not be disappointed after reading this book.  The ending was sad and you will need a tissue box.  There is going to be a sequel after this one and I’m so excited.  This will be about Sam and Griffin. Can’t wait for it!!!  Enjoy!!!
